Strategising skills to Get Strategy done

The human side of strategy goes well beyond the confines of boardroom discussions, industry analysis, or annual corporate plans. Robust strategy is achieved through hard work in the trenches. It is made real with actions, something that a lot of fluff and verbiage, masquerading as “strategy,” fails to realise.
Strategising skills are in great demand because “getting strategy done” is a monumental challenge, especially for small businesses and nonprofits.
Strategy is highly context-specific and often involves dealing with imperfectly defined, uncertain, and complex situations that quickly render template-style (vision-mission-values-strategy) and logical deduction approaches obsolete.
My Strategy Squad explores the narratives of strategy practice from a collective, people-centred point of view. We help create and examine strategic compositions—reference narratives—that form the blueprints for practical strategy concepts, approaches, and actions.
These stories of conviction, optimism, success, and failure from the perspectives of people working in the trenches show infallability in strategy production. They show yawning gaps between propritary business knowhow (however valuable) and strategising skills and “strategy-as-practice.”
Narratives and scenarios are examined and debated in a process designed to frame and reframe problems, make hard choices, improve jugments, understand bias and get invaluable insight from other squad members. We embrace the wealth of conceptual approaches and procedural tools to deliver decisive actions to address high-stakes challenges.
A good strategy doesn’t have to be the best solution, but one resilient enough to adapt and survive. A lack of strategy, or “non-strategy”, leads to significant business and non-market failures with far-reaching and painful consequences.
We coach people-centred strategy as practical skills through our podcast, Twitch streams, YouTube, TikTok, and Substack. We explore the difficulties, encourage open challenge and debate and provide guidance using scientific learning techniques, including learning through play. Strategising skills need to be acquired, practiced and tested. We have found no better way to ingrain such skills through challenge, test, recall and demonstration through real time strategy games.
We strive to help our squad develop a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of strategy, including non-market and social factors. We explore risk, uncertainty, behavioural economics, foresight, issues, stakeholder management, and more familiar competitive advantage or non-market leverage aspects.
A unique yet accessible policy informs our approach—a Tetralogy of Strategy called the “4Cs Framework.” By thoroughly understanding strategy concepts and conduct within your context, we assist our squad (usually those responsible for all aspects of their organisational strategy) in building on their existing knowledge and quickly developing unique strategy compositions. These narrative frames—strategic reference narratives—are field tested by the squad.
Along the way, we implement innovative methods to enhance strategy practice, provide engaging demonstrations of the human side of strategy in action, and offer in-depth materials to help squad members apply the 4Cs.
While this approach to acquiring strategy skills is fun, engaging, and free of fluff, it is also a full-time commitment for us. Fortunately, all of this is completely free of charge for our squad members and will always be so.
